Dogs Victoria have only recently become aware that the requirements for the use of source numbers when advertising puppies are slightly different to that which was assumed initially.
• Dogs Victoria registered breeders are classed as “recreational breeders”. When advertising puppies they are required to obtain a source number from the Pet Exchange Register. This can be done online or by downloading a form, completing it and sending it back to the Pet Exchange Register. The source number generated will commence with the letters RB – Recreational Breeder. Follow https://dogsvictoria.org.au/victorian-legislation/government-legislation/3529/pet-exchange-register-information.html for more information on the Pet Exchange Register and to register for a source number.
• Dogs Victoria members with a Domestic Animal Business permit for Breeding and/or Rearing will have been automatically issued with a source number by their Council when the Pet Exchange Register began operation (mid 2019). This source number will commence with BR – Business Registration. If DV members with a DAB for Breeding/Rearing are advertising puppies, they must use this source number.
• Dogs Victoria members with a Domestic Animal Business permit for activities other than breeding/rearing (eg boarding, grooming, training etc) will have also been issued a source number by their Council in mid 2019 (commencing with BR). However this source number IS NOT the number that you should use when advertising puppies. You should apply to the Pet Exchange Register for another source number as a Dogs Victoria Recreational Breeder, which will commence with RB.
• Dogs Victoria members that have registered as Foster Carers with their Council will automatically be issued with a source number by their Council (commencing with FC – Foster Carer) however this number should not be used to advertise puppies by Dogs Victoria Recreational Breeders – you should use your source number commencing with RB.
• If you need to apply for more than one source number, you will need different email addresses for each Pet Exchange Register source number application. The email address is exclusive to one registration type and hence generation of source number. Different source number type? Different email address required. If you have any questions, please contact Sylvia on spower@dogsvictoria.org.au or 0407 362319
