Brief History
It is generally accepted that Dachshunds came to prominence in Germany where they were used by foresters and noblemen to hunt badger, fox and rabbits in dense forests where a large animal would have difficulty in pursuing its quarry.

Dachshunds are an unusual breed in that there are three different coats: Long, Wire and Smooth, and three sizes: Standard, Miniature and Rabbit – making nine varieties, each developed for a specific hunting purpose, mainly depending upon the type of terrain encountered in their district of origin.

They hunt their prey both above and below the ground.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.

The average life span is 10 to 20 years.

Temperament
Intelligent, courageous, good tempered, determined. The varieties differ a little in temperament. The Standard Smooth can be more aloof than the other varieties and generally is very discerning in whom he likes or dislikes. A Dachshund wants to be with you. The smooth varieties are full of character, quick in attack and defence, intelligent, but can be defiant but faithful to their family.

General Breed Description
Although the Dachshund is historically a hunting breed which has retained a keen hunting instinct that is quickly brought to the surface at the sight of a rabbit or fox, they are remarkably versatile; being equally adaptable as a house pet that gets on well with other pets and makes an ideal companion for town or country.  When at work the Rabbit variety was generally used to hunt and flush rabbits from their warrens.

The smooth varieties used to be the most popular and widely known in Australia.

It is usually the smooth breed type we see depicted in cartoons with the unusual makeup of long body and short legs, making them a favourite with cartoonists.

All colours are permitted, but white is restricted to a small spot on the chest. The usual colours are black, black and tan, chocolate and red and may be dappled.

The Rabbit variety is very rare in Australia but popular in Europe

Coat and Care Requirements
Dachshund are strong, hardy and easy to care for with the smooth variety in particular requiring very little grooming. This variety appeals to many people because they are so easy to keep clean and groom. There is virtually nothing to do to ke.ep their coat in good condition. If this breed type is healthy and properly fed, then the coat will radiate the inner good health. It will have a good sheen. A weekly brush is still required if you wish to have a squeaky-clean dog around you. They shed very little coat, have very little doggy odour and bathing is only required occasionally. Dachshunds get bored hanging around the yard and are enthusiastic eaters, so either ensure regular exercise or cut down on food. They are quite happy to spend their life on your favourite chair, but for the dog’s wellbeing, regular exercise is recommended.

Size
Standard Dachshunds weigh 9 to 12kgs (20 to 26lbs).

Miniature Dachshunds ideally weigh under 5kgs (11lbs).

Rabbit Dachshunds in good condition should measure 25 to 32 cm around the chest

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. All Dachshund varieties have a couple of hereditary health problems and responsible breeders will be engaged in eliminating known issues in the gene pool including Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and heart disease.

Suitability
All varieties of Dachshund are ideal family pets and are excellent with other pets.
