Brief History
For many years the Pharaoh Hound was considered to be one of the oldest dog breeds due to similarities to paintings of dogs featured on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs. However, he is now believed to have developed in Malta far more recently from European hunting dogs as a rabbit hunter, guard dog, and family companion.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.
The average life span is 12 to 14 years.

Temperament
Intelligent, friendly, affectionate, playful.

General Breed Description
This medium, noble, graceful dog has particularly lovely clean-cut lines and is very elegant but still strong. Pharaoh Hounds are light on their feet and quick moving.
They hunt by sight and sound, using their mobile ears to help detect rabbits in rocky walls and hiding places.
Pharaohs are a friendly dog with an outstanding personality – highly intelligent, alert, full of vitality and animation and happiest living with company – but may be initially wary with strangers. They are tolerant of children and well-mannered in the house.
The colour is tan or rich tan, with white markings.

Coat and Care Requirements
The short glossy coat is easy to live with and needs minimal care. A weekly brush or rubdown will keep the coat in good condition.
This breed is an active, athletic breed, so a daily walk is necessary.

Size
Height: Males 56 to 63cms (22 to 25ins), Females 53.5 to 61cms (21 to 24ins).

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Pharaoh Hound is generally a healthy breed. However, health conditions will occur.

Suitability
Pharaoh Hounds are an excellent pet and companion for all families.
