Brief History
The Black & Tan Coonhound is an American breed. Thought to be descended from the noble Talbot Hounds, English hounds during the reign of William 1^st, Duke of Normandy in the 11^th century. In the early part of the 1700's, the Bloodhound was carefully bred with specific types of Virginia Foxhounds to produce a highly specialized type of dog, resulting in the Black & Tan Coonhound. These dogs were often known as "The Settlers dogs". They were the quintessential family dogs of the early American settlers, helping to keep the family safe and fed.

Average Life Span

The average life span is 12 to 14 years

Temperament
Even tempered, outgoing, friendly. Some may be reserved.

General Breed Description
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a very efficient scent hound, with great ability to pick up and follow faint old trails and never giving up in any weather conditions or tough places. Overseas they are used to track and hunt bear, mountain lion, squirrel, possums and racoons, after which they were named.

Both scenting and agility abilities make this breed very versatile. You will find B & T Coonhounds participating in obedience, agility, conformation, hunting & trailing and of course what they all excel in, being a 'lounge lizard' and a wonderful loving family dog.

They are a basic powerful and agile dog which, as the name implies, is always black and tan in colour.

Coat and Care Requirements
The short glossy coat is low maintenance. A good weekly brush and occasional bath is all that’s needed. They are an active dog, so regular exercise is recommended, and being a scent hound means that secure fencing is required.

Size
Height: Males 25 to 27ins, Females 23 to 25ins.

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does.

Suitability
They are an excellent dog for active families.
