GROUP 2 - TERRIERS

Brief History
The gentry and working class alike owned Fox Terriers. During the hunt, when the fox went to ground, Fox Terriers (which were carried in saddlebags on the horses) were sent in after the fox. They chased the fox out of its lair so the hunt could recommence. They did not kill the fox or the hunt would be unable to continue. The working class also bred these dogs to keep vermin down - a job they excel at and which provided much sport. They have retained this hunting instinct until this day and some are still working as rat and rabbit catchers. Smooth Fox Terriers were shown at the first dog show in Melbourne in 1864.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime. The average life span is 14 years. Some live much longer.

Temperament
Gay, fearless, a clown, a devoted friend.

Always full of fun and energy, they take life as it comes and really do look at the bright side of life. They are fearless and will not back down if threatened. As keen hunters, living with guinea pigs, rabbits and chickens could be a challenge, unless they are well fenced. Repetitive obedience lessons will not be of interest to a Smooth, but they will be in their element with tricks and games.

General Breed Description
Smooth Fox Terriers are a perfect model of balance. Square in proportion, they epitomise bone and strength in small compass, they have striking, aristocratic, long, narrow heads, a flat skull and V shaped folded ears. Their tail is set at 12 o’clock. Their smooth coat is surprisingly dense and weather resistant. Basically white, they have black, tan or black and tan patches.

Coat and Care Requirements
Smooth Fox Terriers have a short dense coat which requires little maintenance. However, they do shed coat and because their patches are dark on light, it may show up on what you are wearing. A Fox Terrier pup is mischievous and will escape to find its own fun if you do not have a secure yard. Foxies requires a lot of company, plenty of exercise and some time for relaxation. Your dog will give you undivided loyalty.  When walking your dog, always have it on a lead. Fox Terriers can be very single-minded when they see something of interest, perhaps across the road - often with disastrous consequences.

Size
Height: Males 39cms (15.5ins), Females slightly less.

Weight: Males 7.5 to 8kgs, Females 7 to 7.5kgs

Health
All breeds have health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed health issues and what health testing the breeder does.

Suitability
A well trained Smooth Foxie is a marvelous friend and family dog. His intelligence is amazing and his sense of humour delightful. They can be taught tricks and relish having a job to do. Good companion and watchdogs for families and the elderly, they are an excellent family dog. As with all dogs, young children and pets should always be supervised when together.
