Brief History
The Pyrenean Mastiff was originally bred to be a livestock guardian in the Northeast Spain in the Pyrenees. Moving the livestock to high pastures in summer and back to the lower pastures for winter. They guard the flock against all predators mainly wolves.
Average Life Span
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.
The average life span is 8 to 12 years.
Temperament
The Pyrenean Mastiff is self-reliant, calm and even tempered, but will never back away from a stranger.
General Breed Description
Large, massive breed, strong and muscular, powerful and robust. The Pyrenean Mastiff has a heavy double coat. They can be white, white with grey, lemon, orange, or tan patches.
Coat and Care Requirements
The coat is very heavy with a bristly texture. It will require a weekly combing and brushing. Occasional bathing when required is recommended.
Size
Height: Males: 77 to 81cms, Females 72 to 75cms.
Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Pyrenean Mastiff is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally. These may include Hip Dysplasia (HD), Elbow Dysplasia (ED) and Gastric Torsion (Bloat).
Suitability
The Pyrenean Mastiff is suitable for families living on property and an ideal guardian for livestock.
