GROUP 5 - WORKING DOGS

Brief History
The Bergamasco is a very ancient breed of herding dog, widespread across the Italian Alpine region. Named after the Bergamo region, which was a vast sheep breeding area, they were used to help move sheep during the change or seasons. A Bergamasco was depicted in paintings in the 16^th century.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.
The average life span is 13 to 15 years.

Temperament
As with all herding dogs, temperament must never be aggressive or fearful. Early socialisation and training will ensure a well-adjusted adult, with a close relationship with his human family.

General Breed Description
The Bergamasco is a medium sized dog, of rustic appearance with abundant, ‘one of a kind coat’. They are bright, loyal, loving and trainable although with a dash of independence. Colour can be any shade of grey up to and including solid black. They are considered to be non-shedding.

Coat and Care Requirements
The Bergamasco has hair of three different textures that naturally form loose mats or “flocks”, covering the body and legs. The flocks provided protection from the fierce cold of the Italian Alps. These “flocks” do require considerable maintenance to ensure he is hygienic and comfortable.

Size
Height: Males 60cms, Females 56cms.
Weight: Males 32 to 38kgs, Females 26 to 32kgs.

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Bergamasco is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally.

Suitability
This breed can successfully compete in agility, obedience and other dog sports, however it is a relatively rare breed in this country, and it may be difficult to find one, as puppies are only occasionally available.
