GROUP 5 - WORKING DOGS

Brief History
One of France’s oldest breeds, the Pyrenean Sheepdog dates back to the 19^th century. Used for herding large flocks of sheep in the mountainous regions, he came to the attention of the outside world during World Way 1, when used as a messenger dog for the French army.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.
The average life span is 14 to 16 years.

Temperament
Inquisitive, alert and energetic with strong herding instincts. Wary of strangers.

General Breed Description
The Pyrenean Sheepdog is a medium size breed, with a shaggy appearance. Coat colour is usually fawn, but brindle and grey are also common. He is a courageous, resourceful little dog, showing initiative.  Socialisation and training from an early age required.

Coat and Care Requirements
There are two coat types – long or semi long. Both coats have a harsh texture and require grooming several times a week to keep them tangle free. The coat sheds only lightly.

Size
Height: Males 42 to 48cms, Females 40 to 46cms.

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders in is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Pyrenean Sheepdog is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally. These may include Hip Dysplasia (HD) and hereditary eye disorders.

Suitability
They are a breed which requires a lot of exercise. An easy dog to train, they are quick learners and eager to please. They require an owner who is consistent, firm and provides plenty of praise. The breed is very rare in Australia.
