GROUP 5 - WORKING DOGS

Brief History
A resident of the Polish mountains for hundreds of years, there is no certainty about the origins of the Tatra, but it is possible that they may have evolved from the Mastiff breed. Highly intelligent, the Tatra was very popular amongst the mountain workers as an outstanding sheepdog. Not only a herding dog, the Tatra was often used as personal guard, defending factories and private property.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.
The average life span is 10 to 12 years.

Temperament
The Tatra is alert, intelligent, even tempered, quiet and brave. They are usually friendly to domestic animals and good with families but can be aloof and distrustful of strangers.

General Breed Description
The Tatra Sheepdog is a large, imposing, strong and powerful dog with a beautiful appearance. Despite his size, he should not be heavy and cumbersome. Coat colour is white.

Coat and Care Requirements
The Tatra has an abundant, dense and insulating white coat for protection against harsh and inclement weather in his country of origin. The outer coat is rather harsh and somewhat oily, providing protection against moisture and dirt. He does not require elaborate grooming, just occasional brushing and combing. Extra care should be given during the yearly shedding of undercoat.

Size
Height: Males 65 to 70cms, Females 60 to 65cms.

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Tatra Sheepdog is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally. These may include Hip Dysplasia (HD).

Suitability
The Tatra Sheepdog needs regular exercise due to his high energy level, and a secure yard. The breed is relatively rare in Australia.
