Brief History
Norwegian Elkhounds as we know them have a long and illustrious history. They were evolved as hunters and companion guardians by people of Scandinavian countries to hunt the large northern elk and have they been an integral part of Norwegian life and culture through history.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.

The average life span is 12 to 20 years.

Temperament
Friendly, intelligent and independent.

General Breed Description
As expected from his history, the Norwegian Elkhound is a powerful dog with great stamina and endurance, able to work and live in cold harsh climates. He is an active and agile dog who is friendly and playful, but independent and very intelligent. He works well with people and gets on well with other dogs, so makes a very good companion and family dog. He is an active minded dog, so training should be firm and consistent to bring out the best in him and he can get bored without some interactive activity.

Norwegian Elkhounds are always grey of various shades, with black tips on the outer hairs and a softer, paler colour under the grey.

Coat and Care Requirements
The coat is close, quite abundant and weather resistant with a soft woolly layer close to the skin. It sheds quite profusely twice a year. Generally, the coat can be kept in order with a good brushing twice weekly to avoid matting and knots but may need daily brushing when shedding.

This is an active, sturdy dog who needs exercise regularly. A daily good walk is recommended, and active games enjoyed.

Size
Height: Males 63 to 69cms (25 to 27ins), Females 61 to 66cms (24 to 26ins).

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Norwegian Elkhound is generally a healthy breed. However, health conditions do occur.

Suitability
The Norwegian Elkhound is an active dog and will suit individuals and families who enjoy an active lifestyle.
