Canine Research Foundation

“Promoting healthy dogs that are fit for function”

SUPPORTING CANINE HEALTH FOR OVER 30 YEARS

The Canine Research Foundation (CRF) is a public charitable foundation created on 24th August 1992. The original trustees included the visionary Bob Maver and Roger Bridgford. Roger was the original Chairman of the CRF and held this position until 28 March 2025.The CRF is governed by its Trust Deed and must comply with the requirements of the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission (ACNC). It is endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office.

The Foundation's focus is on research into the causes, prevention or cure of disease and scientific research related to canine health (as provided in its Trust Deed).

The Victorian Canine Association (trading as Dogs Victoria) is the Founder of the CRF and enables the Foundation to continue with its good work through the funding it provides by way of the puppy registration levy.

Each year the CRF calls for applications for grants for research to be conducted at Australian universities.  Since its inception, the CRF has allocated funds to over 100 research projects totalling more than $1.6M.  Eleven applications were received for 2025, with four being accepted following a rigorous assessment process, including referral to a technical panel for peer-review.

For 2025, the successful candidate projects cover diverse subjects:

  • resistance of hookworms to benzimidazoles which are commonly used to treat worms in dogs
  • comparison of blood oxygen from the large central vein of the heart with blood taken more easily from the jugular vein
  • antibiotic resistant bacterial infections in dogs
  • recurring ear infections in dogs.

Results of research are disseminated through Australian and international veterinary journals and conferences.

You can contribute to the CRF by:

  • encouraging your breed club or breed council to recommend valuable research topics for consideration
  • making a donation/bequest to the Foundation. Donations/bequests are fully tax deductible and always welcome.
