Brief History
The English Foxhound dates back several hundred years and was developed primarily to hunt foxes in packs of up to 60 hounds with huntsmen and followers on horseback. There are references to Foxhounds in Australia from as early as 1803, but the introduction of foxes in 1845 saw the sport of foxhunting develop here along with the growth of the breed.
Foxhunting with hounds is now banned and the big packs have gone, but some devotees maintain the breed.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.
The average life span is 12 years.

Temperament
Friendly, even tempered, may be very determined.

General Breed Description
The Foxhound is a handsome, strong and sturdy scent hound. He is an athletic well-built dog with lots of stamina and energy, is of moderately large size, with low maintenance and good disposition. He comes in a variety of colours in combinations and patterns of black, tan and white.

Coat and Care Requirements
The short and weatherproof coat is easily cared for by a bath as needed, and a good brush weekly. Professional grooming is not required.

Size
Height: 58 to 64 cm (23 to 25ins).

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed health and what health testing the breeder does. The foxhound is generally a healthy breed. However, health conditions will occur occasionally.

Suitability
This breed is traditionally a pack hound, so settles well into family life and is good with other dogs. He likes being with people in the house and needs some company, and an outdoor space with good fencing. He requires daily exercise, so is an ideal companion for active families or as a running companion, but most do need to be kept on a leash as their scenting instinct leads them astray easily.
